Heat to Invade Atlanta, DC, NYC, Boston Next Week

Published Jun 15, 2012 8:23 AM EDT | Updated Jun 17, 2012 9:53 AM EDT

Copied

An area of hot air currently positioned over the Central states will progress eastward next week.

This is music to the ears of many East Coast residents who have dealt with many days of downpours, overcast skies and below-average temperatures throughout the first half of this month.

Several locations throughout the Northeast have yet to experience their first 90-degree day this year, including New York City, Boston and Providence. Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh have not hit 90 degrees during June so far.

In contrast, 90-degree days have become commonplace for Midwestern cities. As of June 14, Chicago has already experienced eight 90-plus-degree days, and Detroit and Indianapolis have surpassed the 90-degree mark four times apiece since the start of May. These cities will build on the string of 90-degree heat this weekend.

Fortunes will change next week, as a high pressure system will provide a warm southwesterly flow to parts of the Southeast, mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Temperatures from Georgia to New Hampshire, including Philadelphia, New York City and Boston, are forecast to race into the 90s on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will be especially hot in Baltimore, Washington. D.C., and northern Virginia.

The sunny and warm weather comes at a price, though.

The heat will be accompanied by higher humidity levels (dew point temperatures surging well into the 60s and even the low 70s) in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. This will make for AccuWeather.com Real Feel® temperatures at or above 100 degrees during the day and uncomfortable nights. It is a good idea to review heat safety tips before the oppressive conditions arrive.

Along with the heat and humidity will come poorer air quality and a build-up of haze.

The only natural relief will be pop-up afternoon and evening thunderstorms and local sea breezes. However, the storms will tend to be few and far between, and any sea breeze will diminish during the evening.

Air conditioners and fans will be working overtime, and pools will be busy not only in the I-95 corridor but throughout much of the Eastern states also next week!
