Video: High Winds Affect Northeast
High winds whipped across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast Monday afternoon and last night. Mount Washington [JessePedia], NH famous for its high winds, gusted to an incredible 107 mph last night, and their temperature fell to -36 this morning, producing wind chills below -90 (LIVE | ARCHIVED).
Here in State College, PA, I took the video below of a sign on College Avenue yesterday in estimated 50 mph winds -- I thought that guy was going to twist right off the pole! I tied my record high wind at my weather station at home with a 49 mph reading (the station has been in operation since last spring).
The National Weather Service said that in Elkton, VA and Rockville, MD 50 mph winds were reported, downing trees and powerlines. They also broadcast this report from Mount Sidney, Virginia [Map]:
50? Try 63. A nearby VADOT weather station reported a gust of 63 mph yesterday afternoon. I can tell you I've driven on I-81 through the mountains of Virginia during high winds and it is NO fun.
The Democrat & Chronicle reported that most of I-490 in Rochester was closed due to high winds and blowing snow. And in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, WFMZ reports that the high winds spread the flames of a 4-alarm fire. (They also have a video). A wind gust of 63 mph was also reported at Stow, Mass. and an amateur station in Silver Spring, MD reported 68 mph (though the gusts were a lot higher than the sustained winds; this could be inaccurate).
