Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Under Freezing!
The extreme weather in the middle of the nation last week culminated in a wild ride for many residents between April 9 and 10. The official weather station at Sterling, Colo., fell from 72 degrees at 5:00 PM to 37 at 7:30 PM, with a Tornado sighted! Snow began around 2:30 AM and they were 16 degrees by 6:00 AM! The next night, they hit 1 degree!
The official weather reporting station at Abilene, Texas, fell from 92 degrees at 5 PM to 32 degrees at 6 AM, with freezing rain and thunder!
At one point, the Oklahoma Mesonet was reporting apparent temperatures ranging from 9 degrees in the Panhandle to 82 in the southeast!
This clash of weather systems caused Severe Thunderstorm Warnings to be issued for areas with temperatures in the upper 20s and freezing rain, because they were also receiving large hail!
Here's a video showing some of the highlights from the storm (watch in HD to make it clearer):
The contrast made for an incredible day (and even more so, week) of official records breaking. Overall, 258 records were broken. High temp records were broken to the southeast of the front, cold and snow records to the northwest and rain records in between! Some areas had record lows and highs in the same week!
Highs on April 10 ranged from 108 in Texas to 12 in Wyoming!
