Is Spring Right around the Corner?

Feb 3, 2012; 11:10 AM ET

Is spring right around the corner? According to the updated ECMWF weekly model, it is for the eastern two-thirds of Canada and the U.S. The groundhog had other ideas.

Even though the computer forecast model suggests that there will be some high pressure blocking forming over northeast Canada over the next few weeks, there will be little in the way of very cold air to tap as the real cold air will remain on the other side of the pole from western Alaska through northern Asia.

There will be a shot of arctic air into eastern Canada late next week, but it will be in and out fairly quickly, like so many other air masses this winter.

It does look like a moist pattern for Ontario later this month, but it is impossible at this point to say where it will be snow versus rain.

With the low snow cover from the Prairies through southeastern Canada, the threat for widespread flooding looks reduced for the upcoming spring. Let's hope so!
