Multi-car pileups can go from bad to worse in a matter of seconds. Driver error is the most common cause, and with these safety tips, pileups can be avoided.
A storm diving down through the United Kingdom on Wednesday brought heavy rainfall and a fresh blanket of snow for many across Wales and England.
While locations in central and eastern portions of the region mainly received rain, residents in southwestern England, including Somerset and Bristol, witnessed their first snowfall of the season.
While not the first snow for higher elevations and in places like southern Wales, towns like Aberdale and Brecon Beacons also had a fresh dusting of snow.
Although the snow provided some beautiful scenery across the region, it also caused travel chaos.
Roadways turned slick as the snow accumulated on the pavement, leading to numerous accidents and road closures in the area.
According to the BBC, South Wales police received a high number of calls reporting vehicle accidents on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The snow attributed to a multi-vehicle accident that closed both ways of a 12-mile (19-km) stretch of A470 on Wednesday evening.
Snowy roadways in the Bristol area still had closures Thursday morning.
In addition to the snow, heavy rainfall also worsened flooding across England.
The Yellow warnings for snow and ice that the UK Met office issued late on Wednesday afternoon expired early on Thursday, leaving Yellow warnings for rain from eastern Wales to eastern parts of the East Midlands in England through Thursday evening.
Continuing the flooding from earlier this week, South Yorkshire was one of the hardest-hit areas.
The former Conservative flood minister Richard Benyon told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that 200 soldiers have been on the ground since flooding began last week.
What started as dozens of flood warnings and alerts on Wednesday grew to over 150 by Thursday morning. Many of the flood warnings were located in West Midlands, East Midlands and Yorkshire.
Unfortunately, the same storm that brought the snow and heavy rain into early Thursday will continue to bring showery spells through Friday.
While rainfall amounts are expected to be on the smaller side, any amount of rain could bring a rise to river levels and worsen flooding issues, allowing persistent problems into the weekend.
Cities such as Sheffield, Birmingham, Doncaster, Nottingham, Shrewsbury and Lincoln could all experience more flooding issues in the next few days.
