Weekly wrap-up: Paris snow creates picturesque scenes, travel chaos; Erie, Penn., breaks snowiest winter record

A winter storm moved across the eastern United States on Wednesday, unleashing rain across the southeastern U.S. while snow and ice fell from the lower Midwest to the shores of New England.

The storm delivered enough snow in Erie, Pennsylvania, to make this winter the city's snowiest winter on record.

Just over 152 inches of snow has fallen this winter, breaking the previous record of 149.1 inches in the 2000-2001 season.

The storm caused travel chaos across the region, canceling more than 1,000 flights.

A plane slid off the runway while preparing for takeoff at Baltimore/Washington International Airport. None of the 149 passengers were injured.

Snow blanketed Paris this week and turned one its famous sites into a ski slope.

The Montmartre hill beneath the Sacre Coeur was filled with skiers, snowboarders and people sledding as the city was hit by 6 inches of snow.

The snow caused travel chaos in the city as roads became treacherous. Motorists were asked to avoid travel. The snow also forced the Eiffel Tower to close.

CNN reported that nearly 50 shelters opened to take in the homeless and stranded during the storm.

A deadly earthquake struck Taiwan this week, killing at least 12 people and injuring hundreds.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck 13 miles (21 km) north of Hualien but caused damage in the city. Images showed the city's Marshal Hotel toppled over.

The force of the tremor buckled roads, cut electricity and disrupted water supplies to thousands of households, the local fire agency said.

The world’s newest and most powerful rocket made its maiden launch on Tuesday afternoon as SpaceX successfully launched its Falcon Heavy rocket.

The rocket was heard miles away as 27 engines were used to propel the craft.

The powerful rocket is comprised of three first-stage boosters, which can send a record 119,000 pounds into space.

This launch was a test before the rocket is used for commercial or government purposes.
