Weather for Earth Day celebrations in cities across the US

By Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

More than 1 billion people will be celebrating Earth Day on Monday throughout the world, including in several cities across the United States.

After the first Earth Day in April 1970, the day to raise awareness about environment protection has grown into what Kathleen Rogers, president of Earth Day Network, states is the "largest civic-focused day of action in the world."

"People march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees, clean up their towns and roads," Rogers stated. "Corporations and governments use [the day] to make pledges and announce sustainability measures."

Here is the weather for activities planned for Monday's Earth Day in select cities across the U.S.

New York City

St. James Park in the Bronx will host Earth Day 2019 activities, such as cleaning up the park, gardening and the "Triple 'R' Challenge: Recycle, Reuse, Reduce" from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT.

Tickets can also be purchased for the Earth Day 5K Green Tour, which is not a race but offers participants a way to explore green sites around New York City.

Anyone heading to either event will want to keep an umbrella handy.

“There will be some showers around, especially in the afternoon," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson. "Any of these showers could produce a quick downpour.”

“The vast majority of the morning will be rain-free with some breaks of sunshine, but the afternoon should turn out wetter," he added.

Temperatures will climb above normal to a high in the upper 60s.

NE Mon April 21 pm

Washington, D.C.

The Smithsonian's National Zoo Earth Optimism celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT. Families can enjoy activities to learn how they can help save species.

Earth Day should feature a mixture of clouds and sunshine with temperatures climbing to a comfortable high in the lower 70s in Washington, D.C.

Chicago

Hooray for Earth Day is an event for children at Highland Park on Monday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. CDT. Children can go for a walk and clean the beach along the way before playing games and creating a recycled art project.

Earth Day is expected to start on a warm and dry note with some sunshine in Chicago before a thunderstorm with gusty winds rattles parts of the city and its suburbs late in the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures will climb from an early morning low in the mid-50s to the middle 70s in the afternoon. A high in the lower 60s is more typical on Earth Day.

NC Monday April 21

Dallas

One simple way anyone across the world can celebrate Earth Day is to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

Residents of Dallas can spend time at any of the many local parks, such as Klyde Warren, Dragon or Trammell Crow parks, as well as the Trinity River Audubon Center or the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

Dry weather spanning the Dallas area this weekend will hold through Earth Day. Underneath clouds and breaks of sunshine, temperatures will climb to around 80 as a gusty breeze blows.

SC Monday April 21

Portland, Oregon

Portland's eastern suburb of Gresham will host "Mulch About Town" on Monday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. PDT. Participants will mulch around new plantings and remove invasive species that hinder biodiversity.

Clouds will increase around the Portland area on Earth Day as showers approach, but rain should hold off until Monday evening.

A comfortable high in the middle 60s is expected.
