From sinkholes to blobs of hail to a rare cloud phenomenon, AccuWeather’s Geoff Cornish and Bree Guy count down the strangest weather videos of the year

As we look back on 2024, it becomes clear that this year will be remembered for its extraordinary and unusual weather events that have captivated the public. From a massive sinkhole to an ethereal image appearing in the sky over a city, take a look back at the most astonishing weather phenomena of the year.

#3: The sinkhole fumble

Imagine driving down the road and suddenly encountering what looks like a crater from another planet. That's exactly what happened when a massive sinkhole opened up after a strong cold front brought over a third of an inch of rain. The sheer size and sudden appearance of the sinkhole were enough to make anyone’s jaw drop. Let’s watch it back... WOW! It’s incredible how quickly nature can transform the landscape.

#2: Bizarre debris flow in Nebraska

Coming in at number two, we have a bizarre debris flow that took over a Nebraska field this summer. This wasn’t your typical debris flow; it was filled with hail, creating an otherworldly sight. The video captures the sheer force and unusual nature of this weather phenomenon. It’s not every day you see a field covered in hail, moving like a river of ice!

#1: Mesmerizing rainbow cloud in Vietnam

Our top spot goes to an enchanting weather phenomenon that looks like it’s straight out of a fantasy novel. A rainbow cloud was caught on camera in Vietnam, captivating viewers worldwide. This stunning sight is caused by diffraction, a phenomenon that occurs when small water droplets or ice crystals scatter the sun's light. The result is a breathtaking display of colors that seems almost too beautiful to be real.
