Snow to continue to blankets much of Virginia, Carolinas into Wednesday night

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

A storm will continue to bring accumulating snow to parts of the Carolinas, Virginia, southeastern Maryland and southern Delaware into Wednesday evening.

"The snowfall will be parented by a storm responsible for spreading accumulating snow and slippery travel over the Midwest on Monday and the Appalachians on Tuesday," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski.

Up to 8 inches of snow has fallen from the storm on parts of central North Carolina. Similar amounts are forecast for south-central Virginia with a few inches forecast to extend to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia.

A state of emergency was declared in North Carolina on Tuesday ahead of the arrival of the disruptive snow.

Snow has been responsible for multiple accidents thus far.

In upstate South Carolina and parts of central and northwestern Georgia a coating to an inch or two of snow fell from the storm into Wednesday midday.

In the wake of the snowfall, a freeze-up will bring additional hazards. Similar conditions occurred farther west over the South on Tuesday night.

The risk of patchy black ice will continue to be a problem from the evening to the morning hours, until all of the snow has melted and runoff has ceased through Friday.

A return of mild weather will end the risk of icy patches this weekend.
