Potent storm to bring flood threat to the UK into Sunday

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist & Robert Richards, AccuWeather meteorologist

On a drive through Waldenburg, Arkansas, on Sept. 25, a woman captured several lightning strikes lighting up the night sky.

On the heels of Humberto which brought flooding and gusty winds to parts of the United Kingdom from Tuesday into early Wednesday, more stormy weather is on the way.

Flooding is not expected during this time; however, the risk of flooding will dramatically rise from Saturday night into Sunday as the more potent storm system reaches the United Kingdom.

Rainfall will expand into Wales and England Saturday night and Sunday.

"While the storm will be a quick mover, it will still bring heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding and travel disruptions," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

"Prior to reaching the United Kingdom, this storm will gather moisture from former Tropical Storm Jerry, enhancing the rainfall across the country" added Roys.

Widespread rainfall of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) is expected from Wales into central and southern England with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 100 mm (4 inches).

Flooding will be most likely in small streams and urban areas with some road closures possible.

This storm will also produce locally strong winds across southern Wales and southern England Saturday night into Sunday.

Frequent gusts of 40 mph (65 km/h) with an occasional gust to around 50 mph (80 km/h) are possible during this time.

The combination of heavy rain and strong winds will result in a higher risk of downed trees and power cuts.

Roys also warns that coastal flooding will be possible at high tide in exposed coastal locations across the region.

There will be little time to recover from the weekend storm before another fast-moving, heavy rain-producing storm reaches the United Kingdom late Monday into Tuesday.

Similar areas will be at risk for local flooding and travel disruptions, as well as gusty winds from this storm.

Attention will then turn to Hurricane Lorenzo currently moving into the central Atlantic Ocean.

Lorenzo will track north and then northeast toward western Europe next week with potential impacts to the U.K. by Thursday or Friday.

If Lorenzo veers to the west of the U.K., a period of gusty rainfall will cross the country.

However, if the storm were to track near or into the country, a powerful windstorm is possible leading to widespread damaging winds, power cuts and travel disruptions.
