Photos: Substantial snow sweeps from North Dakota to Indiana on the 1st weekend of spring
Friday night into Saturday felt nothing like the first few days of spring across a portion of the midwestern United States as an Alberta clipper storm dropped substantial snow.
The storm spread a swath of 6-12 inches of snow from North Dakota to Indiana Friday into Saturday. A swath of higher amounts was recorded in northern Iowa.
More than a foot of snow was measured in Mason City, Iowa, meaning the first weekend of spring was spent shoveling, plowing, sledding and contending with snow-packed roads—not typical springtime activities. A high near 45 degrees Fahrenheit is more common in Mason City this time of year.
The snow fell at a rate of 1-3 inches per hour in some locations, leading to difficult travel across the region. This included on stretches of interstates 35, 70, 74 and 80.
Thundersnow even occurred in Mason City and a few other communities.
Snow covers I-35 across northern Iowa as 8-12 inches of snow was reported around Mason City.
The swath of snow spread eastward into the central Appalachians late Saturday, leading to more disruptive travel, but giving kids a late-season opportunity to play in the snow.
