Monsoon Lows Unleash Heavy Rain in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh

A pair of monsoon lows will continue to bring heavy rainfall to northwestern India and northern Pakistan as well as northeastern India and Bangladesh.

From Friday through Monday, heavy rain pounded the city of Surat, totaling more than 330 mm (13 inches) of rain.

Through the first half of this week, the monsoon low causing this heavy rainfall will move to the north, spreading into Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

From Monday into Tuesday, heavy rain fell in eastern Pakistan, as the city of Bahawalnagar received around 140 mm (5.50 inches) of rain. This is almost half of the yearly normal rainfall for the region which is 282 mm (11.10 inches).

Heavy rain spread even farther north on Tuesday as downpours targeted Lahore, Islamabad and Patiala. These areas reported generally 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) with additional downpours expected into Wednesday.

"The moisture will also be pulled into Kashmir and Nepal," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls said. Downpours are possible through Wednesday as moisture is pushed into the Himalayan Mountains.

This moisture streaming into the mountains will cause heavy rain from Kashmir to Himachal Pradesh with total rainfall of 6 inches (150 mm) possible. Rainfall of this magnitude will be capable of producing life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

While dangerous flooding is possible through Wednesday, the rain will also be beneficial for areas that could be receiving one of their last significant precipitation events prior to the start of the dry season which will last until the monsoon rains return next summer.

Following this surge of downpours, dry weather is expected to settle into western India for the rest of this week and continue into next week.

Meanwhile, another monsoon low has moved from the Bay of Bengal into Bangladesh bringing localized flooding with it.

Rainfall has already surpassed 125 mm (5 inches) in Feni and Rangpur with additional downpours expected through Thursday.

Elsewhere across Bangladesh and northeastern India, rainfall has generally averaged 12-50 mm (0.50-2.00 inches). This includes Bankura, Kolkata, Dhaka and Guwahati.

Widespread rain and thunderstorms will persist through at least Thursday resulting in an elevated threat for flash flooding.
