Landslide in northern China collapses homes, killing 7 people

Rescue efforts on Saturday in response to the landslide in northern China Friday evening confirmed seven people dead and listed 13 missing.
Crews have been able to rescue another 20 people.
The landslide in Xiangning county in Shangxi province knocked down a public bathhouse and two residential buildings that homed a total of 14 households.
State television CCTV reports heavy equipment could not be used at the site due to "geological conditions," so rescuers have been shifting through the debris by hand. According to their account, the number of rescuers amount to more than 600 people.

According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty, the landslide did not occur amid excessive rainfall. Dry weather has dominated most of the month across the region. Winter is the dry season across northern China.
"Light rain is possible from Tuesday night into Wednesday, though the rest of the week is expected to be dry," Douty said. "Any rain should not be heavy enough to raise the risk for additional landslides."
