Dry, cold and blustery night in store for Game 2 of the 2018 World Series
Following a rain delay and lightning evacuation in Fenway on Tuesday evening, Wednesday's game will take place in drier but much chillier conditions.
Once the storms moved out of the Boston area on Tuesday, fans faced wet seats and damp, mild weather with temperatures near 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Anyone with tickets to Wednesday's game can leave the rain gear behind.
Winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves will be appreciated tonight, however, as cool air and frequently gusty winds combine to put the AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature in the mid-30s throughout the game.
Winds will be generally out of the north or north-northwest, blowing towards home plate down the third baseline. This wind direction would put some resistance on balls hit towards left field at Fenway, in addition to pushing right-field hits towards the foul line.
After this game, the series will move to the Dodger's home field for games three, four and five (if necessary), where much calmer weather is expected.
"It may be a good thing, for the weather for the game, that the series heads back to Los Angeles late this week and this weekend," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
"A nor'easter is forecast to affect the Boston area from Saturday to Sunday," Sosnowski added.
Anyone heading to Dodger Stadium this week will not need to worry about bringing along waterproof or winter gear.
Tranquil weather will persist in Southern California through the end of the weekend, with plenty of sunshine and afternoon temperatures peaking in the upper 80s F. Overnight lows will bottom out in the mid-60s F.
Should the series last into early next week, the storm will have departed New England, but spotty rain and snow showers may occur.
Officially, the coldest World Series was back in 1997 during the fourth game of the match up between the Florida Marlins and the Cleveland Indians. Played in Cleveland, temperatures were around 38 degrees at the first pitch, with a wind chill around 18 degrees.
Records of temperatures at World Series games only began in the 1970s, so it is certainly possible that there were colder games prior to that time.
