Drier, breezy finish to Open Championship

The Open Championship at Carnoustie will continue this weekend with the final rounds of play.

"Carnoustie has hosted the Open Championship on seven different occasions, the last of which was in 2007 when Padraig Harrington defeated Sergio Garcia in a 4-hole playoff," AccuWeather Meteorologist Kyle Elliott said.

The tournament is being held in eastern Scotland, a region which has a history of extreme weather that can create chaos for golfers and spectators.

The weather can change quickly, causing dramatic changes to the course conditions. Light winds can turn into gales while sunshine is replaced by downpours within minutes.

Dry weather is expected for the final round of play on Sunday; however, a new challenge will arise as the strongest winds of the tournament blow throughout the day.

While winds are not expected to be strong enough to cause delays on Sunday, a gusty breeze will add some difficulty to play as players try to make a push for the win.

"Strong winds make it more challenging to control ball flight and calculate the net distance to the pin once the wind is factored in," Elliott added. "When golfers have a strong tailwind, it can be difficult to hold the ball on the putting surface."

Temperatures will also be the highest of the tournament on Sunday with a high near 24 C (76 F) with broken cloud.
