Dangerous storms to target Germany through Thursday

By Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist & Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Severe thunderstorms and flooding downpours will plague parts of Germany through Thursday, putting lives and property in harm’s way.

Following a round of severe weather across Germany on Tuesday, additional thunderstorms will threaten parts of the country on Wednesday and Thursday.

Anyone spending time outdoors should monitor AccuWeather MinuteCast® and be ready to seek shelter. As soon as thunder is heard, the risk of being struck by lightning is present.

Germany 8/1 2

“It will not take a lot for places across Germany to flood given the amount of rain over the last couple of weeks,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.

Areas from Cologne to Stuttgart received 150 percent or more of July’s normal monthly rainfall, while some locations in central Germany and around Berlin had more than 250 percent of normal rainfall.

Following a hot and humid Tuesday in Munich, violent thunderstorms will target the city on Wednesday.

Damaging winds, flooding and hail will be the main concerns. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Meanwhile, drier and less humid air will pour into northwestern Germany at midweek. However, the dry period will not last long.

A new front racing eastward from the United Kingdom will bring showers and thunderstorms to most of Germany on Thursday.

Some of the thunderstorms may turn heavy and gusty across southern and eastern Germany in the afternoon. Berlin, Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Munich are at risk for these intense thunderstorms.

Roys is concerned for the downpours to trigger flash flooding. There may also be isolated incidents of damaging winds.

An active weather pattern will keep the threat for showers and thunderstorms in the forecast from Friday through Sunday; however, most locations will have at least one dry day during this time.
