A 12-year-old boy died and an 11-year-old girl was hospitalized after they fell through the ice on a lake in New York over the weekend.
The Albany Police Department said in a statement Sunday that officers and firefighters responded at around Saturday afternoon to reports that two juveniles had fallen through the ice at Washington Park Lake. Officers and firefighters quickly located and rescued the girl, who was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment.
The search for the boy continued, and roughly three hours after the call for help his body was located and recovered by members of the New York State Police underwater recovery team.
Investigators believe the boy attempted to walk north across the lake toward the lake house and fell through the ice. The girl then tried to help him, following his path across the ice before falling in herself.
“Our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time,” Albany City School District Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said in a statement. “This is a terrible tragedy and we are grieving as a school community.”
