2018 Germany summer forecast: Heat waves, severe storms to highlight turbulent season
The unseasonable warmth that has graced Germany in April and May is a sign of things to come for the upcoming summer season.
Above-normal temperatures are expected from June through August and there is also a high risk for multiple heat waves.
Long-duration heat waves with several days of near- or record-breaking heat are expected.
“Munich can expect three to nine days with high temperatures at or above 32 C (90 F),” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.
Other locations that will experience at least three days with high temperatures at or above 32 C (90 F) include Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Cologne.
Heat waves are possible in each month from June through August and will increase in likelihood as the summer progresses and precipitation becomes more infrequent.
These conditions will be dangerous for children and the elderly as overnight temperatures will allow for only modest cooling before heat returns the next day.
"The young and elderly will face the greatest health risks from these heat waves, especially if living in homes without air conditioning," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert.
Anyone that works or spends extended time outdoors will need to be prepared for these extreme conditions.
Extra water consumption and avoiding direct exposure to sunshine during the hottest time of the day is recommended.
"Poor air quality will also be a concern during the heat waves," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

The intense heat will also bring an increased risk for severe thunderstorms across parts of southeastern and eastern Germany.
Locations most at risk for severe thunderstorms include Munich, Nuremberg and Dresden.
These thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging winds, hail and flash flooding. The strongest storms will be capable of producing isolated tornadoes and large, destructive hail.
A few locally severe thunderstorms are possible in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin this summer. The greatest threat with these storms will be damaging winds and flash flooding.

The combination of intense heat and drier-than-normal weather will result in an elevated risk for wildfires by mid- to late summer.
Anyone planning hiking or camping trips should pay close attention to fire conditions in their area and be aware of evacuation routes in case a fire develops nearby.
"Any wildfires this summer could add to the air quality issues across the region," added Roys.
