2018 Germany autumn forecast: Warmth to persist in well into October

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Autumn will feel like a continuation of summer across much of Germany as above-normal temperatures prevail well into October.

While the worst of the heat will subside by September, the month will still bring temperatures more typical of summer than early fall.

Despite the continued warmth, the threat for severe weather will be minimal this autumn as drier-than-normal weather limits opportunities for widespread thunderstorms.

Germany Autumn Forecast 2018

The dry weather that will accompany the warmth will further exacerbate the drought conditions that have taken hold in parts of the country during the summer months.

Drier-than-normal weather will also continue its grip on the country throughout September and October before wetter conditions arrive in November.

Any rainfall will be too late to help agriculture for this year; however, the late-season rain will be beneficial for increasing soil moisture ahead of planting next year’s crops.

The most frequent rain will be across western Germany including: Dusseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund and Bremen.

As rainfall becomes more common, temperatures will trend back toward normal levels during late October and November bringing an end to any lasting warmth.

The warmth will hang on longest in eastern Germany where cities from Munich to Dresden and Berlin can expect plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors into early or mid-November.

The dry and warm weather will also be welcomed by the thousands of people attending Oktoberfest and other autumn festivals across the country.

A shift toward cooler weather will be felt across all of Germany during the second half of November; however, the overall warm pattern throughout autumn will limit the threat for any low-elevation snow accumulations.

As cooler air finally begins to settle over Germany in late November, the first chances for snow will arrive for the higher terrain, but lasting accumulations are only expected on the highest mountains.
