Reno 911: Winds Damage then Destroy Radar!
The Reno radar is down, and it ain't coming back anytime soon, my friends. Last week, I posted in "J's Breaking Weather News" at right a link to My Buddy Scott's Blog [JessePedia] that high winds - to the tune of 142 mph - had damaged the Reno NEXRAD radar on December 19th (he had satellite cloud maps to explain further).
Well, before the NWS could repair it, on December 25th, winds to 94 mph destroyed what was left of the radar dome. Below are shots from the NWS's detailed PDF on the subject, showing the radar on Dec. 19 & 25th. Below are photos from both days. What a Christmas present!
These pics remind me of when the Laughlin Air Force Base Texas NEXRAD was imploded in 2001 by a thunderstorm downdraft. The graphs show in the PDF, which contains more incredible photos, can be seen online for the 19th and the 25th.

Here are some other incredible wind gusts from December 19th:

I had previously reported on winds in the West on December 25th, which were up to 130 mph.
In totally unrelated news, I almost met an actor from Reno 911 last Spring.
