Northeast blizzard to drop feet of snow
The first really big winter storm of the season is coming, and it could be followed by more storms in a winter pattern to challenge records. Here are the Friday forecast maps from AccuWeather and the NWS:

Some of the SREF ensembles are going up to 50 inches of snow, and we have a max of 40 inches in our graphic.
It's also important not to forget there could be significant ice accumulation to the south of the storm, which may lead to power outages and traffic accidents.

I believe that when this pattern continues and we get more blockbuster storms later this month, we could end up like February 2010, when some parts of Maryland had over 50 inches of snow on the ground -- it just might be further north.

Despite, by the way, what you might hear, there is no loss in forecast accuracy of the GFS model since the government shutdown started. ln fact, the U.S. model was
the most accurate this Monday and Tuesday, and there are graphs to prove it.
