Weather experiments Part 4
By Jason Nicholls, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Published Apr 5, 2020 2:07 PM EDT
The final experiment in the series requires a glass container with an opening that a hard boiled egg can rest on without falling into the bottle. The other items are a hard boiled egg, a napkin and a lighter. Adult supervision is needed as it requires using the lighter. Check out the video below to see the experiment and what you need to do:
This experiment works under the same principal as the saucer experiment at the beginning of the blog series. The burning napkin placed inside the container heats the air causing the air to expand. Some of this expanded air escapes around the hard boiled egg over the opening. As the flames goes out, the air cools and contracts which lowers the air pressure in the bottle. Higher pressure outside of the container pushes down on the egg and forces it into the container.
I will do a few more experiments next week with more that you can do with materials around your home.
