Long range weather pattern update
By Brett Anderson, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Updated Jan 4, 2021 5:06 PM EDT
Stormy pattern expected to persist across British Columbia and portions of the Pacific Northwest through next week, which will continue to pile up the snow along the Coastal Range and Cascades. There are indications that the stormy pattern may begin to ease in these regions during the second half of the month as high pressure may try to build over the Rockies, which would send the storms more up into northern BC and southeastern Alaska.
In the East, massive high pressure block over northeastern Canada will keep much of central and eastern Canada mild as Arctic air is held back across Russia. This block will also keep the eastern storm track suppressed, which may lead to drier conditions from Quebec to Atlantic Canada.
This type of pattern can lead to some interesting storms for the U.S. Middle Atlantic and interior Southeast in terms of snowfall potential. Main issue, of course, will be the lack of true cold, thus the storms may have to "generate" their own cold.
