An ongoing winter storm will shutdown travel and has the potential to be the biggest in years for the Washington, D.C. area. Snow, sleet and freezing rain will continue, heavy at times into Sunday night. A total of around 6 inches is forecast for the city, due to changeover to sleet and freezing rain. A foot or more of snow is forecast well to the north and west of the city with less sleet and lower accumulations, under 6 inches to the south and east of the city, where more sleet and freezing rain occur. Streets and highways will be snow packed and slippery during and for a time after the storm. Frigid air following the storm will result in little or no natural melting for a few days.
