Vigorous storm system to increase flood risk across parts of South America

By Maura Kelly, AccuWeather meteorologist

Published Jun 25, 2020 5:05 PM EDT

Annual monsoon rainfall forced residents living in Morigaon, India, to evacuate after widespread flooding led to at least 16 fatalities reported on June 27.

After one storm system drenched parts of Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay last week, another system will threaten to produce another round of downpours into midweek.

A storm began to organize across central South America Sunday night as areas of rain and thunderstorms developed across the region.

Widespread rain will fall from Buenos Aires in Argentina to eastern Paraguay and southeastern Brazil into the middle of the week.

The storm system will lead to heavy rain and thunderstorms from eastern Paraguay and Misiones in Argentina into Rio Grande Do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana in Brazil through Tuesday.

According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls, "The heaviest will likely be across eastern Paraguay, northern Rio Grande Do Sul, Santa Catarina and southern Parana where amounts can reach 50-100 mm (2-4 inches)."

An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 150 mm (6 inches) will be possible in these areas, especially into the higher terrain.

Any thunderstorms that develop will threaten the region with locally strong winds, while rounds of heavy downpours can lead to flash flooding and mudslides into the middle of next week.

After the heaviest rain clears the area by Tuesday evening, lighter rain will linger into early Wednesday.

Nicholls added that areas of flooding would be likely this week as the region will still be recovering from a round of moderate to heavy rain that moved over the area late last week.

Uruguay is one area that has been hit hard by flooding rainfall in recent days. The Uruguayan army was deployed last Thursday to help evacuate residents in Sarandí del Yí as the Yí River burst its banks.

"Luckily, the system expected during the beginning of the week will spare Uruguay of the heaviest rainfall," stated Nicholls.

Mostly dry and cooler conditions will return to central South America during the second half of the week.
