Southern France, Italy brace for heavy rain, renewed flooding
By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Published Nov 29, 2019 5:50 PM EDT
Less than a week after torrential rainfall triggered deadly flooding from France into northern Italy, a new storm is bringing heavy rainfall to the region.
Last week's flooding resulted in at least nine deaths across the region and caused severe damage to roadways and communities.
Sunday night, locations from Marseille to Nice, Genoa and Milan, will experience bouts of rainfall renewing the risk for flooding.
As of Sunday evening a general 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) of rain had fallen across southeast France with local amounts over 100 mm (4 inches).
Meanwhile, the heaviest rainfall is expected across northern Italy Sunday night into Monday morning. Nearly 50 mm (2 inches) of rain had already fallen in Genoa as of Sunday evening.
This flooding risk includes Venice, which has been inundated by floodwaters multiple days during the month of November.

A burst of heavy rainfall will also target parts Slovenia and northwest Croatia from Sunday night into Monday.
Flooding and mudslides will be a concern as the region is forecast to receive 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) of rainfall with an AccuWeather Local StormMax of 125 mm (5 inches).
Much of the region can then expect dry weather on Tuesday and Wednesday before the threat of rainfall increases on Thursday and Friday as a storm passes near or to the south of the area.
