New Invisible Iceberg series featuring AccuWeather Founder Dr. Joel Myers to debut on AccuWeather TV Network and AccuWeather NOW
AccuWeather Global Weather Center – Sept. 5, 2024 – A new original series highlighting the impactful ways that weather and climate have shaped many major historic events around the globe will debut on AccuWeather platforms on Sept. 9.
This new series is based on the book Invisible Iceberg: When Climate and Weather Shaped History written by AccuWeather Founder and Executive Chairman Dr. Joel Myers.
Dr. Myers offers insight and perspective into the fascinating ways that weather has played a role in history alongside host AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno.
“Hurricanes, severe droughts, extreme cold, volcanic eruptions and even sunny days have influenced decisions and altered the outcome of countless momentous events in history,” said Dr. Myers. “It’s fascinating to examine the ways that weather and climate have shaped the course of history in the United States and around the world.”
Invisible Iceberg will air on the AccuWeather TV Network and stream on AccuWeather NOW every Monday and Thursday at 12 p.m. EDT.
Each episode of Invisible Iceberg will focus on one of the 47 chapters from the book, highlighting the role that weather and climate played in major events, including the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, the Hindenburg airship disaster, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Wright Brothers first flight and dozens of other historic events and milestones dating back millions of years, long before humans walked the earth.

“It’s important that we learn from the past as we prepare for the future,” Dr. Myers explained. “More and more people are experiencing the impacts of extreme weather, global warming and climate change. Increasing rainfall rates have raised the risk of flash flooding in many places. Growing seasons are changing and shifting as temperatures rise. Hurricanes have the potential to rapidly intensify in ocean waters that are getting warmer. We expect more destructive storms and extreme temperatures in the decades to come, impacting the ways we travel, grow food, operate businesses and live our daily lives.”
About Invisible Iceberg: When Climate and Weather Shaped History
AccuWeather Founder and Executive Chairman Dr. Joel Myers released his debut book Invisible Iceberg: When Climate and Weather Shaped History in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Extreme weather was identified as the biggest risk in 2024 by the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report, and as the frequency and severity of extreme weather and climate events increase, so do their direct economic costs.
Invisible Iceberg: When Climate and Weather Shaped History was the No. 1 new release in the Weather and Natural Disasters book categories on Amazon when it was published in January.

Dr. Joel Myers takes readers on a journey from the beginning of time to the modern day to see how weather and climate impacted world events throughout history, both the good and the bad.
Learn about the comet that hit Earth 66 million years ago, and how it triggered a massive climate disruption that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs; the dramatic climate shift in 1213 BC that created the conditions for the 10 Plagues of Egypt, a foundational moment in three major world religions; how superior knowledge of the winds allowed the ancient Greeks to prevail over Persian attackers in 400 BC; the volcano in 44 BC that helped launch the Roman Empire; how tropical storms thwarted Mongol invaders and preserved an independent Japan in 1273; how the "Little Ice Age" ushered in the age of the European Witch Trials, which eventually influenced the Salem Witch Trials; the shipwreck of the Sea Venture in 1609 in an Atlantic hurricane that inspired Shakespeare's last play, The Tempest; the fog that helped to create an independent United States of America during the Revolutionary War; the storm in 1814 that ended the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte; the "Great White Hurricane," i.e. two major blizzards, that helped create the New York subway system in 1888; how the ice-filled waters in which the Titanic sailed, which were colder than the air above, created a phenomenon known as thermal inversion that made it so the crew aboard that fated vessel could not see icebergs until they got too close; and so much more!
Also explored are weather what-ifs, including the haunting question: Would the hurricane that remained off the coast have prevented the deadly attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, if it had moved closer to New York City?
Invisible Iceberg: When Climate and Weather Shaped History is an exciting, sometimes shocking, trip around the world that showcases the different ways weather and climate have truly changed the course of history.
You can purchase Invisible Iceberg: When Climate and Weather Shaped History from Barnes & Noble or on Amazon.com and wherever good books are sold.
