Dr. Joel N. Myers to Deliver TEDxPenn Talk on His Entrepreneurial Success and Insights in Creating the Weather Industry

Myers, Founder, President, and Chairman of AccuWeather, the global leader in weather information and digital media, will speak at TEDxPenn2016 on Sunday, April 10, at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. Myers, a Fellow of the American Meteorology Society who was named one of the greatest entrepreneurs in American history in Entrepreneur Magazine’s “Encyclopedia of Entrepreneurs” book, will share his personal "Eureka!" moment that pioneered the weather industry.
When Myers’ "Eureka!" moment struck, he realized he was not merely fascinated by weather – he could revolutionize the way it was forecasted for the betterment of all people worldwide. A Philadelphia native and Central High School graduate, Myers’ inspiration and pursuit to transform the weather industry by providing the most accurate forecasts began in the Philadelphia area, making TEDxPenn the right forum to share his entrepreneurial success story. In his TED Talk, Myers will share the critical moments in his life that have driven him to combine his passion for weather with business to successfully found and build AccuWeather.

Dr. Myers’ personal contribution to the science of meteorology has been recognized by his election as a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). AccuWeather received the Corporate Award from the AMS for “nearly 50 years of exceptional innovation and leadership in weather applications and communication.” Joel’s numerous awards and recognitions also include the National Weather Association Individual Achievement Award and election to the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 1992, he cofounded the American Weather and Climate Industry Association and continues to serve as a board member. Joel also serves on the board of The Committee for Economic Development. In addition Joel has served five governors, as one of the longest serving members of Team Pennsylvania, and has advised Senators and U.S. Presidential candidates on policy issues. Joel has been an invited speaker to The New York Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Myers received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in meteorology from Penn State University, where he was an important influence as a faculty member for nearly 20 years and a force on the Board of Trustees for 33 years. He continues to serve as an Emeritus Trustee, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to education, and was recently awarded Penn State’s highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. Appreciative of the great impact Penn State has had on his life, Dr. Myers has made many commitments to excellence in education. He has awarded dozens of scholarships to Penn State students in meteorology and information technology and made the largest gift ever received by the Meteorology Department to fund the university’s state-of-the-art weather station, as well as donating one of the world’s largest weather vanes in the world, which sits atop Beaver Stadium.
In addition, Dr. Myers supports American Cancer Society, Free to Breathe, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and many other causes. He also recently founded the Parents’ Resource Center, and serves as its board chair.
