U.S. Cellular Selects AccuWeather.com's Wireless BREW Application
AccuWeather.com to Provide Next Generation Wireless Weather Forecasts to U.S. Cellular easyedge(SM) Phone Service Subscribers
(State College, PA, October 8, 2003) - AccuWeather.com (www.accuweather.com), the Web site of AccuWeather, Inc., the world's leading commercial weather service, today announced that U.S. Cellular (AMEX:USM) has signed an agreement to deliver its award-winning BREW™-enabled wireless weather application through the carrier's newest product offering, easyedge(SM) Enhanced Wireless Services.
Just released this past spring and based on QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW) platform, the AccuWeather.com application will become one of the featured applications on U.S. Cellular's BREW-based data services set to be deployed throughout its CDMA 1XRTT markets in fall 2003.
"Our partnership with U.S. Cellular, one of the nation's leading wireless providers, further affirms the popularity AccuWeather's BREW application is enjoying in the wireless market," says Jim Candor, senior vice president of new media for AccuWeather, Inc. "AccuWeather is committed to continuing to set the standard for delivery of useful, compelling multimedia weather on wireless devices, and we look forward to more opportunities in the future."
U.S. Cellular will make AccuWeather.com's Wireless BREW application available for download on selected wireless handsets, including LG, Audiovox, Kyocera and Motorola. AccuWeather's product is the first BREW-enabled weather application to offer "zoomable" and animated radar imagery for wireless phones. This technology delivers rich, multimedia weather forecasts and images to Third Generation (3G) wireless handsets.
AccuWeather.com's BREW application will feature pinpointed 10-day Local Forecasts; detailed Hour-by-Hour™ Forecasts; and regional and national Satellite Imagery, updated hourly. In addition, it will offer local, metro, state and regional "zoomable" radar animations that will show precipitation areas on the move.
Subscribers can watch storms sweep across their wireless handsets by zooming in and out on the radar to view specific metropolitan areas, regions or states. The application also features AccuWeather.com's patent-pending RealFeel Temperature™, which displays what the temperature actually feels like based on seven different weather variables.
"To best serve our more than 4.3 million customers with the most up-to-date technology, we make partnering with industry leaders a top priority, and AccuWeather, Inc. is no exception," said John Cregier, senior director of data services and strategy for U.S. Cellular. "AccuWeather.com's BREW Application has clearly established itself as the premiere provider of wireless weather applications and we are excited to offer our customers real-time weather information on their easyedge(SM)- enabled wireless handsets."
