Eastern Washington Wildfires: AccuWeather Delivers Earlier, More Accurate Forecasts and Best Communication

Dry conditions and powerful winds fueled a fast-moving wildfire that devastated parts of the Spokane, Washington, area on Aug. 1.

On Aug. 1, 2026, strong winds and exceptionally dry vegetation contributed to explosive wildfire growth across eastern Washington, including the Spokane area. Multiple fast-moving wildfires exhibited dangerous fire behavior, threatening communities and infrastructure, and degrading air quality. The Spokane Wildfire Complex is likely the most destructive wildfire in Washington state history.

AccuWeather provided the most advanced notice, most accurate forecasts, and best communication of wildfire danger compared to the National Weather Service (NWS) and all other known sources.

AccuWeather first alerted railroad and other business customers to the heightened wildfire threat on Monday, July 27, via email through its Latest Wildfire and Smoke Update, stating:

"Gusty winds across the interior portions of the Northwest and British Columbia, low relative humidity and lack of rain this weekend will likely allow several wildfires to spread in size. The weather pattern this weekend is reminiscent of late June when wildfires quickly developed and multiplied across the Southwest, Utah and Colorado. There is a very high fire risk from southern British Columbia into eastern Washington and Oregon given the strong nature of the gusts and antecedent dry vegetation."

This exclusive briefing provided valuable situational awareness several days before the most dangerous fire weather developed and well ahead of any other known source.

On Tuesday, July 28, five days before the most dangerous fire conditions, AccuWeather's forecasts available on the AccuWeather app, website and other platforms for Spokane stated that "strong winds and excessively dry brush will lead to extreme fire danger" for Saturday and Sunday. At that same time, the NWS forecast for the same period simply called for "breezy, clear" conditions, while the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) identified only Critical Fire Weather Conditions, understating the magnitude of the wildfire threat.

Not until Wednesday, July 29, did the NWS issue a Fire Weather Watch, and the SPC upgraded its outlook to Extremely Critical fire weather conditions. By then, AccuWeather had already been communicating the risk of extreme fire danger for a couple of days.

Then, on Thursday, July 30, two days before the wildfire outbreak, AccuWeather's Latest Wildfire and Smoke Update used enhanced wording on the significance of the weekend wildfire potential in the Northwest, indicating: "This pattern will allow existing fires to spread rapidly while several new fires will likely ignite in the dry brush and timber. This will be an exceptionally busy time for fire crews and likely emergency managers as well. It will rank as the biggest fire outbreak so far this year in the Northwest and adjacent parts of British Columbia and Alberta."

As the fires began Saturday afternoon, AccuWeather continued to provide the most actionable communication, stating: "Breezy and smoky with hazy sun; strong winds and excessively dry brush will lead to extreme fire danger." This best described and communicated the extreme fire risk.

Even as fires threatened on Saturday afternoon, other weather sources greatly understated the risk and provided significantly less useful information in their forecasts:

  • The Weather Channel App: "Sunny and windy, visibility reduced by smoke."

  • Apple Weather: "Sunny," with no mention of wildfire danger or smoke impacts.

AccuWeather was the only known source to consistently communicate the combination of strong winds, exceptionally dry fuels, and the resulting extreme fire danger, providing businesses and the public with earlier, clearer and more actionable information.
