Destructive Tornado Near Appleton, Wisconsin: AccuWeather Exclusively Provides Life-Saving Warning Before Tornado Touches Down

Extreme meteorologist Dr. Reed Timmer captured this video as a tornado tore through Appleton, Wisconsin, leaving behind major damage.

On July 27, 2026, a particularly intense EF-3 tornado with peak winds of 145 mph struck communities near Appleton, Wisconsin, destroying homes and businesses. Sadly, injuries were reported.

As has been the case with many other situations, AccuWeather was the ONLY known source to provide advance notice of the destructive tornado. The National Weather Service (NWS) and all other known sources did not issue a tornado warning until the tornado had been on the ground for three minutes.

AccuWeather's team of expert meteorologists detected the rapidly developing tornado and quickly issued a lifesaving SkyGuard® Tornado Warning at 11:51 a.m. CDT, providing five minutes of previous advance notice BEFORE the tornado touched down. This invaluable advance notice was provided directly to decision-makers by text, phone and email before any other known source, giving businesses and communities time to seek safe shelter and better prepare, potentially saving lives.

AccuWeather expert meteorologists were also available for immediate phone consultations for customers in the impacted area, giving decision-makers the confidence needed to make the best weather-related decisions. For example, one Fortune 500 company with a location in the area called our expert meteorologists 3 times in 30 minutes so we could continually support them in making the best decisions.

Learn how you can have 24x7x365 access to AccuWeather's Expert Meteorologists. Contact AccuWeather today and schedule a meeting.

According to the NWS storm survey, the tornado began at 11:56 a.m. CDT. The NWS did not issue a Tornado Warning until 11:59 a.m. CDT, three minutes AFTER the tornado had already touched down.

Residents and businesses relying solely NWS warnings or warnings from all other known sources received no advance warning before the tornado began.

People and businesses relying on NWS warnings or on warnings from other known sources that repackage NWS warnings would have been less prepared for a destructive tornado unless they were using AccuWeather's Severe Weather Warnings. Some warning systems, including Wireless Emergency Alerting (WEA) based on less-accurate NWS warnings, would not have been activated until after the tornado was already on the ground.

The critical advance notice, available only from AccuWeather, once again enabled businesses and people to be better prepared and stay safer.

Study after study has shown that AccuWeather provides more accurate and often earlier notifications and greater detail on significant and extreme weather events that affect businesses and threaten the health, welfare and lives of individuals. AccuWeather has proven to be the most trusted and most accurate source of weather forecasts and warnings. This is another example of the more than 100 events every year in which AccuWeather forecasts with proven Superior Accuracy™ and clearer descriptions of weather impacts help people, communities and businesses better prepare and stay safer.

Why take unnecessary risks? Contact AccuWeather today and schedule a meeting to see how AccuWeather's SkyGuard® Severe Weather Warnings can better protect your business from tornadoes and all other severe weather threats.
