Yesterday's Storm In Technicolor
The image below, snapped about 5 p.m., shows yesterday's storm in all its glory. This image is from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus, a service that I oversee which gives users an advanced interactive weather data application on the web. You can download the full image here.
The map shows sea-level pressure in a gradient from red (high) to blue (low). The core of the strong low-pressure system is easy to see near the Great Lakes. Also shown are wind speed and direction arrows, showing the wind flow into and out of the storm. Below that is a pale layer of infrared satellite, showing the "comma cloud" formation as the low pressure system pulls in moisture along the front. On top of that is shown the radar image, showing strong thunderstorms stretching from Canada to Mexico and snow falling over the Midwest.
