Snow In The West, Snow In The East, Cold All Over
UPDATE: A new snow list this afternoon:
Jeffersonville, VT: 24.3"
Dannemora, NY: 19.5"
Mount Washington, NH: 17.4"
I changed Mount Washington's snow total this morning based on a report from Brian Clark on Facebook. Here's a list of snow amounts from the Southeast (via Frank Strait via NWS reports). Both Mount Mitchell and Grandfather Mountain, NC fell to 21 degrees and you can see a photo of ice on the Grandfather Mountain Facebook Page.
Mt. Leconte, TN: 4"
Mount Mitchell, NC: 3"
Grandfather Mountain, NC: 0.5"
Beech Mountain, NC: 0.3"
ORIGINAL STORY: The radar this morning showed more than rain for the continental U.S., in fact 15 states showed snow falling.
Some of the amounts in the New England mountains are impressive:
Nashville, VT: 20.3"
Dannemora, NY: 15.5"
Jefferson, NH: 11.5"
Facebook Fan Photos showed the snow falling on Spring-green trees.
At the top of Mount Washington, New Hampshire (Home of the World's Worst Weather) they got 10.3" of snow with another 8-14" expected today and tonight, along with winds over 100 mph tomorrow. AccuWeather.com's Brian Clark said on Facebook "Storm total so far of 17.4 inches with 4-5 foot drifts on the summit already." In fact, they used the "a" word this morning in their discussion (avalanche!) You can see pictures from up there on Facebook:
Elsewhere, the snow will end by tonight. And even as far south as Mount Mitchell, North Carolina, they checked in at 23 degrees with either snow or rime ice on their webcam.
Temperatures were unusually cool for this time of year, nationwide, with not even any 70s on the map in Florida; only a tiny area of the Desert Southwest was that warm.
Factor in the stiff breeze and wind chills were in the teens and 20s this morning, north of the Mason-Dixon line and south down the spine of the Appalachians.
Another tidbit that I got from a photo gallery user in Montreal, Canada who uploaded the photo below... Montreal had 7.6" of snow this week; they only had an inch in March!
