Friday Morning Canada Smoke
The smoke from the Canadian wildfires mentioned yesterday extends from Maine to North Carolina this morning, as you can see from this Visible satellite image which I have enhanced:
SEE ALSO: ORIGINAL IMAGE, ANIMATED
I have labeled clouds, smoke and fog on this image. If you look at the original animation linked above, you can tell which are which. Fog is in the valleys (which gives it the "vein" look) and doesn't move on the visible satellite animation (though later in the morning, it will shrink in coverage as the sun "burns it off".) Clouds move, and look like they might from above in a plane, because the visible satellite image is just a camera shot from a satellite high above Earth. The smoke looks, well, smoky.
You can monitor the smoke with our live Northeast Visible Satellite Loop (PREMIUM | PRO).
The plume of smoke will continue to be seen on satellite over the Midwest and Northeast through the weekend. Fortunately for us oxygen-breathers, the smoke is being carried by the jet stream, which is at a height of around 20,000 feet.
For more information on the fires themselves, monitor our blogs form ex-Canadian Action Steve Penstone (PREMIUM | PRO) and Canadian weather expert Brett Anderson (PREMIUM | PRO).
Brett points out that the smoke may lead to better sunrise & sunset photos:
