US Easter weather outlook: What can you expect in your area?

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Following another severe weather outbreak into the start of the extended Easter weekend, much of the nation will be free from powerhouse storms on Sunday, but there will be areas of unsettled conditions.

Easter bunny, eggs and flowers

People are encouraged to closely monitor severe weather bulletins at their location and along their travel routes on Friday and Saturday. Even on Easter Sunday and beyond some secondary roads may be blocked by flooding in parts of the Central states and New England.

The best bets for Easter egg hunts to end the week will be from California to much of the Plains states, where most areas can expect at least partial sunshine.

Late Week US

Conditions will be quite warm in the Southwest with highs in the 70s, 80s and 90s F on Saturday, which is traditionally a busy day for egg hunts.

The chilliest locations for sunrise services on Easter Sunday will extend from the Northwest to the Rockies and into parts of the Midwest and Appalachians. In these areas, temperatures are likely to begin the day in the upper 30s to the middle 40s.

Easter Sunrise Temps 11 am

As is often the case, areas across the South will be mild with temperatures in the 50s and 60s as dawn breaks. Areas along the Interstate 95 corridor of the mid-Atlantic can also expect a mild start to the day for the most part.

A storm will finish up with drenching rain during Easter Sunday morning in eastern New England. This area is likely to have the nastiest conditions over the entire lower 48 states for a time. Enough rain is likely to fall to cause flash and urban flooding, especially in Maine and across urban areas of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Farther west in the Northeast sector, chilly air aloft is likely to trigger midday, afternoon and early evening showers from western New England to the mid-Atlantic, central Appalachians and eastern Great Lakes region.

This can occur even where the day may start off or turn out sunny for a time. In a couple of extreme cases, a gusty shower with small hail can even occur for outdoor gatherings.

Another zone where unsettled conditions are anticipated will extend from part of the Intermountain West to the northern and central Rockies to portions of the central Plains and Upper Midwest.

In the higher elevations of the Rockies and Wasatch Range, some snow will fall and may even bring a small, fresh accumulation for those planning an Easter weekend ski trip.

Some of the best weather conditions in terms of sunshine will be across the South, but also in parts of the middle Mississippi Valley and along the Pacific coast.

As for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Easter Monday, sunshine and warmer conditions are expected in Washington, D.C., with temperatures starting the day in the 50s and rising to near 80 in the afternoon under sunshine.
