UK: Downpours to raise the risk of flooding through Saturday
A strengthening storm system with its sights set on the United Kingdom going into the weekend will bring heavy rain and gusty winds with it.
Gusty showers will then spread over northern England, Wales and southwestern England.
Mild air will hold across southeastern England on Saturday; however, gusty showers will affect any outdoor plans.
Farther north, a soaking rain will continue into the midday hours of Saturday across Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland. Showers will then linger during the afternoon and into Saturday night.
Gusty winds will usher much cooler air into the region throughout the day with afternoon temperatures hovering near 16 C (61 F) in Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast.
The combination of heavy rainfall and the long duration of the event will result in a high risk of flooding across northwestern England and southwestern Scotland.
These locations can expect total rainfall of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) which may cause streams to overflow their banks and result in travel disruptions.
Strong winds will accompany the wet weather across the country with frequent gusts of 20-30 mph (32-48 km/h) lasting into Sunday.
Localized gusts of 40-50 mph (65-80 km/h) are possible across Wales and England on Saturday as winds slacken slightly across Northern Ireland and Scotland.
The strong winds can result in some tree damage and localized power cuts along with some travel disruptions.
Gusty showers will be possible across much the country from Sunday with more rounds of wet and windy weather on the way for next week.
