South of the Storm Track

Published Feb 1, 2013 7:33 PM EST | Updated Feb 3, 2013 7:52 PM EST

Copied

The southern tier of the nation will remain south of the wintry storm track into next week.

While a series of storms from Canada buzz areas from the northern Plains to the Northeast with snow in the air much of the time, the weather pattern across the South will favor a lack of major storm systems for the first week of February.

There will be a few flirts with wintry precipitation over the Tennessee Valley and the southern Appalachians. Most snow from the weak storms up north will stay away.

Next week a light flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will lead to a growing area of clouds and spotty showers along the upper Gulf Coast into the interior South. The return flow of moisture could also lead to areas of fog in the region.

Because the storms are relatively weak sweeping across the nation, no severe weather outbreaks are expected for the next week.

Since arctic air is being channeled eastward rather than southward, no freezing conditions are forecast in central Florida and along much of the Gulf Coast.

The chill impacting part of the region at the end of this week will be driven away over the weekend. Thumbnail images by Photos.com
