Saturday to bring more downpours to northern, eastern UK
The risk for flooding downpours will focus on the northern and eastern United Kingdom to start the weekend as Wales and the south of England welcome drier weather.
Saturday will bring yet another round of drenching rain and thunderstorms to a part of the U.K. This includes Northern Ireland, eastern England and Scotland.
In the hardest-hit areas, officials may be forced to close roads for a time. Streams can overflow their banks and flood neighboring land and homes.
Remember never to drive through floodwaters. The road underneath may be damaged, and it takes only 30 cm (12 inches) of swift-flowing water to sweep most vehicles away.
"Areas that already endured flash flooding in recent days will be at an even higher risk for renewed flooding," AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.
Flash flooding struck parts of southwestern England and Wales from Thursday afternoon into the night. BBC News reports that 100 people had to be evacuated from the Old Fire Station arts centre in Oxford after water came through the roof. Homes sustained flooding in Herefordshire.
The downpours can cause travel slowdowns in Norwich, York, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast.
Even in the absence of flooding, spray from other vehicles can dramatically reduce visibility for motorists. Standing water creates a heightened risk of vehicles hydroplaning when traveling at motorway speeds.
Anyone with outdoor plans should remain alert for changing weather conditions and be ready to move to higher ground or seek shelter.
As soon as thunder is heard, the risk for being struck by lightning is present.
Outdoor activities will not be in jeopardy across all of the U.K.
The weather is expected to improve across Wales and the South of England. This includes London, where the All Points East festival continues in Victoria Park on Saturday.
Temperatures will rise to near 22 C (lower 70s F) in London on Sunday. Be sure to apply suncream with sunny spells in the forecast.
The dry weather is expected to hold around London for Sunday, whilst odd thundery showers return to many of the same areas experiencing unsettled weather on Saturday.
A shower or thunderstorm may also dot parts of southern Wales and South West England. However, this wet weather will impact only a small fraction of the day.
Looking ahead to early next week, high pressure north of the British Isles will keep shower activity on an isolated level.
The high directing cooler air in from the North Sea will cause temperatures to be trimmed closer to more seasonable levels across more of England.
