Reports: Severe storms threaten tornadoes, damaging winds across midwestern US

Severe thunderstorms will rip through parts of the Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes into Friday night, threatening the region with damaging winds, heavy downpours and even isolated tornadoes.

“Damaging winds and small hail will be the primary threats with the thunderstorms into Friday night as they race to the east-northeast between 40-50 mph,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio said.

Cities that could experience severe weather through Friday night include Detroit, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

As of 10:00 p.m. EST, a line of strong thunderstorms was tracking across Ohio and was headed toward Cleveland and Columbus.

As of 9:30 p.m. EST, there were over 3,700 electric customers without power across Indiana, according to Duke Energy, with thunderstorms still tracking across part of the state.

Small hail has been common with the thunderstorms tracking across the Midwest with hail generally ranging from the size of peas to quarters.

There have been over 15,000 lightning strikes around the Great Lakes between 2 p.m. EST and 8 p.m. EST, many of which occurring over Indiana, Michigan and western Ohio.

Strong thunderstorms are moving through Louisville, Kentucky with gusty winds, small hail and frequent lightning. Louisville International Airport measured a wind gust of 37 mph as the storms rolled through.

At 6:20 p.m. EST, a line of severe thunderstorms west of Cincinnati was producing wind gusts above 50 mph and hail as large as quarters.

A severe thunderstorm moved through the Detroit area around 4 p.m. EST with gusty winds and small hail reported around the city, including Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Thunderstorms have also produced small hail ranging from the size of peas to nickels across much of northern Michigan, including near Grand Rapids.
