Nearly 140,000 customers were left without power in the Carolinas and Virginia after severe storms ripped through parts of the southeastern United States over the weekend.

The current number of outages has dwindled to around 17,000 as of Tuesday morning, according to PowerOutage.us.

Five people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a tree fell on a house in Reidsville, North Carolina, where there were many reports of damaged houses and downed trees.

ElectriCities said major outages in Huntersville, North Carolina, are currently being restored with lots of work to do along Highway 115.

A confirmed tornado caused significant damage to homes, businesses and trees in Lynchburg, Virginia. The storm also flipped over several cars.

Amherst and Lynchburg Public Schools will be closed on Monday due to the widespread damage.

Storm damage in the Danville, Virginia, area may have also been the result of a tornado. There were several reports of downed power lines, poles and trees, as well as damaged homes, in the area.

VSP is working alongside our local public safety partners & @VDEM to help those devastated by tonight's storms. Amazingly only minor injuries reported so far across #Virginia, to include here in Elon in @AmherstCountyVA. @PublicSafetyVa pic.twitter.com/ZTQqMpnKN1
