Photos: Nate unleashes heavy rain, damaging winds across Gulf Coast
Hurricane Nate passed through the central Gulf of Mexico on Saturday night, weakening as it moved inland over Mississippi and Alabama.
The storm made its first landfall in far southeastern Louisiana near the mouth of the Mississippi River on Saturday evening. A second landfall occurred near Biloxi, Mississippi, Sunday night.
Nate made a second landfall along the Gulf Coast early Sunday morning and continued unleashing heavy rain across the South, leaving more than 100,000 residents without power in Alabama and Mississippi.
It eventually weakened to a tropical storm early Sunday morning before weakening into a tropical depression shortly before 10 a.m. CDT Sunday.
"Through Sunday morning, Nate has brought 3 to 6 inches of rain to parts of Mississippi, Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle. There are some localized amounts between 7 and 8 inches. Elba, Alabama recieved a total of 5.55 inches with 3 inches of that falling in 2 hours," AccuWeather Meteorologist Jordan Root said.
Nate claimed the lives of at least 21 people in Central America late last week.
The storm is the latest in what has been a very damaging and costly 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.
"Losses for 2017 hurricane season will total $350 billion, 11 times the average of past five years," said AccuWeather Founder, President and Chairman, Dr. Joel N. Myers.
