Man dies after being pulled from rough surf off the coast of North Carolina
A 62-year-old swimmer died in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, after being swept away from shore by a current on Saturday.
The man reportedly ignored the “No Swimming” flags posted by lifeguards and died in the rough surf off Kill Devil Hills on Saturday.
Tropical Storm Chris, located just offshore, has been stirring up rough surf from the Carolinas to the mid-Atlantic coast.
According to The Outer Banks Voice, the man was reported missing around 12:15 p.m. EDT, then was spotted in the water approximately 15 minutes later.
The current was strong and moved the swimmer quickly, according to a town news release.
The unresponsive swimmer was pulled from the ocean and lifeguards initiated CPR before he was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
He is the fifth person to die while swimming off an Outer Banks beach this summer, all men being between the ages of 48 and 79.
The other four deaths were in the waters off Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Three of those were attributed to the victims being caught in rip currents.
