Hold on to Your Husks
A powerful, slow-moving storm will bring high winds to the Omaha area through Thursday evening.
The wind will be accompanied by rain for a time. It may seem like a hurricane as a result.
Winds have been gusting in the neighborhood of 50 mph over central Nebraska and South Dakota Tuesday night and Wednesday. That area of strong winds will be in Omaha's neighborhood through Thursday.
The gusts can be strong enough to send loose items airborne, such as trash cans, recycling bins and lawn furniture.
Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel for sudden gusts that can push high-profile vehicles and small, lightweight cars.
Winds will diminish over the area Friday.
Chilly air being brought in by the winds will ease over the weekend. After a couple of days with highs in the 50s, 70-degree air will return over the weekend.
