Heavy lake-effect snow to create perilous travel conditions across Great Lakes into midweek
Kalamazoo County, Michigan, saw lake-effect snow accumulations of 3-5 inches that caused icy, slick road conditions. Cleanup now begins in the aftermath.
A brief but heavy burst of lake-effect snow will create dangerous travel conditions into midweek, including along the Interstate-90 corridor of New York and Pennsylvania.
The lake-effect snow may once again turn into a nightmare for motorists, similar to what occurred on Saturday across the eastern Great Lakes.
“Lake-effect snow showers and squalls will continue downwind of the Great Lakes into Wednesday,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski.
A reinforcing shot of cold air moving over the Great Lakes and Northeast behind an early week storm is serving as the trigger for the snow showers and squalls.
Up to one more inch of snow can be tacked on to Erie, Pennsylvania’s already impressive month-to-date snowfall of 14.2 inches. The city typically receives 8.5 inches of snow during the entire month of November.
An area of high pressure moving in from west-to-east will help to quickly shut down the lake-effect snow in Michigan and Pennsylvania as Wednesday progresses.
A band of very heavy snow has set up from southeast of Lake Huron to southeast of Lake Ontario and will bring heavy snow to parts of Ontario and upstate New York through Wednesday.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun is concerned that Syracuse, New York, will lie right in the heart of this heavy snow band and pick up a significant accumulation of snow.
Between 6-12 inches of snow is expected to accumulate in and around the city, with significantly lower accumulations just a few dozen miles to the northeast and southwest.
Several inches of the snowfall can pile up within an hour's time, which will create a dangerous situation for anyone who is out on the roadways.
Stretches of interstates 81 and 90 can become slick and snow-covered in the span of minutes, and visibility can be reduced to near zero.
Motorists may run the risk of being stranded if they are out during the height of the lake-effect snow.

Major disruptions to daily routines can occur.
The snow will likely be shut off by Wednesday night as the area of high pressure settles overhead.
All eyes will then turn to a new storm brewing to the south that will spread rain, snow and an icy mix across the Northeast.
