Germany: Warmest air so far this year to pour into Berlin, Munich on Sunday
Very warm air will move into Germany on Sunday, making it feel more like summer than spring.
Sunday will be the warmest day of the weekend outside of areas from Saarland to western Lower Saxony.
“It’s going to feel warmer than a typical summer day,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Eric Leister said.
Temperatures on Sunday in central and eastern Germany are expected to run 6 to 12 degrees Celsius (10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal, with highs around 27 C (80 F) in cities such as Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt. In Berlin, temperatures will soar to around 28 C (83 F).
"For many eastern communities, Sunday will also be the warmest day so far this year. This includes in Berlin and Munich," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said.
While a dry day will complement the warmth across the eastern areas on Sunday, rain and thunderstorms are expected to move into the west ahead of an approaching cold front.
Most of the rain will hold off until the afternoon with the steadiest rain and thunderstorms occurring toward the western border, including in Cologne and Saarbrucken.
"Spottier showers and thunderstorms will strike from Hamburg to Frankfurt to Stuttgart in the afternoon," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski.
"Though the storms will be brief, residents should take indoor shelter at the first sign of thunder or lightning," she said.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue to spread across the country Sunday night into Monday, not reaching Berlin until Monday afternoon. Cooler air will also arrive in a similar fashion, erasing the weekend warmth.
"Temperatures on Monday will be held 6-12 degrees Celsius (10-20 degrees Fahrenheit) below Sunday's highs in western and southern Germany," Pydynowski said.
