Videos show the terrifying moments when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocked Colombia on Aug. 10, causing widespread damage and more than 100 deaths.

At least 79 people have died and buildings have collapsed after a powerful earthquake rocked western Colombia on Monday morning, sending people rushing into the streets as aftershocks rattled the region.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time, with the epicenter located about 250 miles (400 km) west of the capital city of Bogota, according to the USGS. Shaking was felt as far away as Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama, with the quake being followed up by a magnitude 5.0 aftershock.

Some of the most significant damage was reported in western and central Colombia where multiple buildings collapsed and emergency crews searched through piles of debris for survivors.

By late Monday night, at least 111 fatalities had been reported with over 3,000 still missing, according to The Associated Press. The full scope of the damage remained unclear as rescue crews continued searching damaged buildings and officials assessed hard-hit communities.

Monday's tremor was the 10th earthquake this year worldwide to register at least a magnitude 7.0. It was also the strongest earthquake to strike Colombia since a magnitude 8.0 earthquake was recorded on July 31, 1970.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near San José del Palmar, Colombia, on Aug. 10, 2026, around 7:30 a.m. local time.

Photos from across the region showed crowds gathered in the streets, many waiting nervously for updates and bracing for additional aftershocks. In some areas, rubble spilled onto roads from damaged buildings and storefronts.

The weather through Wednesday could impact search and rescue efforts across the region.

"The weather in Colombia for until midweek will feature chances for showers and a few thunderstorms, which does include Bogota," AccuWeather Meteorologist Peyton Simmers said. "The shower chances will decrease Wednesday, Thursday and Friday." Simmers added that temperatures in the lower terrain of western Colombia will be 85-96F (29-36C), while in Bogota, high temperatures are expected to stay between 67-69F (19-21C).

The tremor came 47 days after a pair of catastrophic earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, which resulted in over 5,000 fatalities.

This is a developing news story. Continue to check back with AccuWeather for more details as they become available.
