Ampil to take aim at eastern China

Ampil will unleash gusty winds and heavy rainfall across eastern China into Monday.

Ampil, currently a tropical storm, will track northwest of Shanghai into Monday bringing heavy rain that will lead to flooding concerns.

Ampil will then continue to track inland and weaken across eastern China early this week, spreading the risk for flooding rainfall to areas from northern Anhui and Henan to western Shandong.

Widespread rainfall of 75-150 mm (3-6 inches) will occur with locally higher amounts possible. Such heavy rain can lead to flash flooding and travel disruptions.

Southern Japan continues to endure a deadly heat wave, and any clouds and rainfall from Ampil will bring some relief from the current situation.

However, parts of southern Japan are still reeling from deadly flooding that killed more than 200 people earlier this month. Recovery efforts could be hampered by any significant rainfall.

The greatest threat for rainfall will be across Kyushu and southern Shikoku with just isolated showers and thunderstorms in the higher terrain of southwest Honshu.

Northern Taiwan and the southern Ryukyu Islands were slammed by former Super Typhoon Maria last week and could once again be at risk for heavy rainfall.

While currently forecast to dodge the worst of Ampil, the storm could pull tropical moisture into the region causing localized downpours and flooding into Monday.
