2018 Winter Olympics: Strong winds force postponement of men's downhill alpine skiing

Update: 7 p.m. EST Saturday: Officials announced that due to the high winds, the men's downhill competition has been postponed on Sunday.

No men's downhill at @pyeongchang2018 today 😔 The wind is too strong in Jeongseon. The forecast is not looking good neither, so tomorrow's AC-DH training is cancelled and next one on the schedule will be the Alpine Combined on Tuesday.

Skiing's fastest event will kick off on Sunday at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre in PyeongChang, South Korea.

More than 300 athletes qualified for men's downhill alpine skiing, which takes place on Sunday, Feb. 11.

Norway boasts an impressive team of skiers, known as the "Attacking Vikings." The team includes two former Olympic medalists.

Austria's Matthias Mayer will attempt to defend his gold medal title from the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Sunday will be a windy day in PyeongChang, AccuWeather Meteorologist Adam Douty said.

"Wind gusts at the top of the course will be from the northwest and could gust to 40 mph," he said.

Once the athletes race farther down, winds will drop off quickly but could still be gusty.

It will be a cold day with temperatures struggling to reach minus 12 C (10 F) at the summit.

Destination PyeongChang

"With temperatures combined with the wind, it will be pretty brutal," Douty said.

AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature will hit minus 17 C (near zero F).

A few snow flurries could fly, but no significant accumulation is forecast.
