Spring set to return as temperatures rebound in Midwest, Northeast

Forecasters say that the March-like cold and snow that hit much of the east at the beginning of the month will be erased, but how soon can residents expect the warmup?
The start of May, and especially Mother's Day weekend, brought what some would consider unwelcome visitors to the weather party: winterlike cold and even snow. The chill has left residents from Minnesota and Illinois to Massachusetts and Maryland wondering when normal spring conditions may return.
The good news is, the answer according to AccuWeather meteorologists is later this week.
One final cool shot will sweep through the Midwest and Northeast into Tuesday, bringing another round of winterlike chilly air that follows gusty thunderstorms and snow from Monday.
Low temperatures in cities like Detroit, Pittsburgh and Buffalo will once again approach or dip below the freezing mark, threatening any sensitive plants that gardeners may have planted early.
A transition into a new weather pattern will force temperatures to moderate some through the middle of the week. The northern tier of the East is expected to experience conditions more typical, albeit a little cool, for the middle of May into Wednesday or Thursday.
Then, the new weather pattern really settles in later in the week.
"After being well below normal on Mother's Day weekend, temperatures will spike to above-normal levels by the end of the week in the East," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

"Warmth will return to the center of the country at midweek, before the warmth spreads to the eastern third of the country by the end of the week," Roys said.
The most noticeable jump up in temperatures will occur on Thursday in the Midwest and Ohio Valley, and then on Friday in the Northeast. Some communities in the mid-Atlantic could see a spike in temperature two days in a row.
High temperatures will soar into the upper 60s to near 70 F for Syracuse, New York and Boston and into the 70s for the remainder of the region. A few cities may even hit the lower 80s by Friday afternoon, like Washington, D.C and Raleigh.
Such temperatures are near normal in more northerly parts of the region, to as much as 5 degrees above normal in more southerly locations.
The warmth may be a shock to the system after several winterlike days in May.
High temperatures in Indianapolis will swing 20 degrees from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday. In Washington, D.C., a week's time will allow the high temperature to jump almost 30 degrees by Friday afternoon.
By the weekend, temperatures may even climb a few degrees higher east of the Appalachians, allowing for afternoon highs in the 80s to spread as far north as Philadelphia.
More stormy weather is expected to hit the Great Lakes and the Northeast for the second half of May, likely leading to lower high and low temperatures through the end of the month. However, early indications suggest that the wintry chill that started off May will not return.
