Pattern change to usher in cold, blustery conditions to the Southeast early this week

New research has found that rising sea levels will be more of a threat to the world's coastal cities than previously thought.

An expansive storm system bringing rain, snow and ice across the Great Lakes and Northeast will make its presence known across the Southeast early this week.

Showers that started the day over the western parts of Virginia, the Carolinas and northern Georgia gave way to a clearing sky and gusty winds on Sunday.

Rain is forecast to exit the coastal areas from Virginia to northern Florida during Sunday night.

Gusty winds will usher in chilly air into Monday.

Snow for the mountains!

While much of the region can expect dry weather, snow showers will adorn the southern Appalachians.

"A general 1-3 inches will fall on the mountains from eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina to West Virginia and western Virginia," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

Locally higher amounts are in store over the ridges into Monday night.

"Motorists venturing along Interstate 77 in Virginia, I-81 in Virginia and Tennessee and I-64 and I-68 in West Virginia should be prepared for slippery conditions," Sosnowski said.

As Americans return to work on Monday after the holiday weekend, crashing temperatures will be felt all across the Southeast.

Highs in the 60s and 70s from Sunday will be replaced with 40s and 50s for many.

Places like Atlanta, Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama will experience temperatures in the 20s and 30s on Monday night under mainly clear skies.

Even portions of interior Florida are expected to drop into the upper 30s on Monday night.

Below average temperatures will continue across much of the Southeast on Tuesday before temperatures trend back to average levels on Wednesday.

Typical highs during early December range from the lower 50s over the southern Appalachians to the upper 50s in eastern North Carolina, the upper 60s along the upper Gulf coast and near 80 in South Florida.

Temperatures are forecast to trend above average later this week.

The next chance of rain is forecast to come on Thursday night over the lower Mississippi Valley and Friday along the southern Atlantic coast.
